Imam Reza Shrine draped in black inscriptions to mark Imam Sadiq’s martyrdom anniv.
Imam Reza Shrine, in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, has been covered with black inscriptions to commemorate martyrdom anniversary of Imam Jafar Sadiq – the 6th  Imam of Shia Muslims.

On the eve of the martyrdom anniversary, the shrine servants covered the sacred spaces in black, creating an atmosphere of mourning for pilgrims and residents as commemorations began. Black banners were raised over the golden dome, and special inscriptions dedicated to Imam Sadiq’s martyrdom were installed across various courtyards.

The inscriptions, each designed with themes reflecting the teachings and scholarly status of the 6th Imam, filled the shrine with a spirit of grief.

In Enghelab Eslami Courtyard, an inscription read: “We are the followers of the truthful one from the family of Muhammad (pbuh); we never submit to the enemy’s banner.” The message echoed the steadfastness and insight of Imam Sadiq’s followers throughout history.

In Azadi Courtyard, another inscription stated: “A thousand groups came and a thousand schools vanished; yet Shia endured because it preserved the words of Imam Sadiq.” The message highlighted the Imam’s lasting role in safeguarding the authentic teachings of Islam and strengthening the path of Shia faith.

Special mourning ceremonies for Imam Sadiq, including sermons, elegies and cultural programs, are scheduled to be held in various courtyards and halls of the illuminated shrine.
