Restoration of rooftops brings renewed grandeur to Imam Reza Shrine

Restoration of rooftops brings renewed grandeur to Imam Reza Shrine
Comprehensive project upgrades facilities and restores traditional aesthetics around the golden dome of Imam Reza Shrine.

A major restoration project is underway to reorganize and beautify the central rooftops of Imam Reza Shrine. The plan, led by Astan Quds Razavi’s Construction and Maintenance Organization, aims to remove visual clutter caused by outdated air‑handling systems and diverse rooftop structures accumulated over centuries of construction.

The project includes dismantling and lightening old installations, reducing the weight of brick domes, and strengthening rooftops against weather and fire. Lightweight concrete shells have been added to improve durability while preserving historical integrity.

Covering nearly 10,000 square meters, the work spans the eastern side of the sacred precinct, northern areas including Dar al‑Vilayah, and southern sections such as Alavi and Najafabadi halls, as well as historic schools.

Air‑handling and ventilation systems dating back to the 1980s have been replaced or relocated. Thirteen new platforms were built for air units, with 13 devices installed, six moved, five retained, and eleven old systems removed. The new arrangement ensures efficient service to all prayer halls while restoring the rooftops’ traditional appearance.

Additional measures include waterproofing, proper drainage, and protective coverings for equipment. A comprehensive lighting plan around the golden dome has also been implemented, enhancing its brilliance throughout the day and night.

Despite the scale of the project, services for pilgrims continue uninterrupted. Temporary ducts maintained airflow, and heavy equipment was moved with minimal disruption to visitors.
