Intl. architects unite to heal grief over Minab school martyrs

اف
Designers from forty-seven countries have registered for an international competition to design a memorial landscape for the martyred students of Minab, seeking to transform collective trauma into solace and peace.

With registration drawing to a close, an international landscape and memorial design competition for the Minab school martyrs has drawn widespread global engagement.
Designers from forty-seven countries have registered for the humanitarian event, which seeks to channel profound grief into consoling architectural space.
Bereaved families frequently gather at the cemetery, spending long hours beside their children's graves.
According to Saeed Mehrpouya, director of the competition, “This persistent loss has evolved into deep community trauma requiring physical environments that provide enduring peace”.
Discussing the event's conceptual development, Mehrpouya explained: "Initial suggestions proposed titles such as 'Unfinished Dream,' focusing strictly on lost childhood. However, field assessments and frequent meetings with the families revealed that focusing solely on loss might reproduce psychological trauma. Consequently, we shifted our focus toward concepts of solace, peace, and life."
He underscored: "The title 'Minab Against Oblivion' represents a decisive stance against silence. It ensures that the voice of these innocent children and the criminal nature of the attack remain vivid in the public conscience."
The competition tasks participants with striking a delicate balance between representing sorrow and conveying hope.
Designers must depict the heartbreaking tragedy while providing an introspective sanctuary that brings comfort to the families.
Mehrpouya maintained: "Architecture essentially represents the conscious transformation of space to meet human emotional and physical needs. In this tragic event, life is the content and environment is the vessel meant to soothe this excruciating pain."
He added: "The principal audience consists of the grieving families, and this space must demonstrate that their loss has not been ignored."
To safeguard the historical memory of this tragedy, three complementary initiatives are currently underway, two initiated by the Custodian of Astan Qods Razavi (AQR).
Under the auspices of government bodies, the school building will be preserved as an educational museum.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of AQR, eight schools bearing the name of the martyred students will be established across underprivileged regions of Iran to foster knowledge.
The third pillar involves developing an 8,000-square-meter memorial zone across the cemetery to establish a serene, permanent landmark.
The open competition has garnered significant international engagement, recording over 200,000 visits from 119 nations and over 7,000 competition brief downloads. Domestic Iranian designers account for approximately seventy-two percent of applicants, alongside twenty-eight percent international participation.
Mehrpouya concluded: "A panel of seven prominent domestic and international specialists will judge the submissions. Following the selection of the winning design, technical drawings will be finalized, and executive construction will commence on the anniversary of this tragic event under AQR directives."
