Engineering, maintenance, and restoration projects enhance pilgrim comfort at Imam Reza Shrine

افب
Behind the scenes, engineering expertise, structural restoration, and ongoing maintenance help ensure the safety, comfort, and peace of mind of millions of pilgrims visiting Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, northeastern Iran.

When visitors enter Imam Reza Shrine, they primarily seek spiritual peace amid its historic courtyards and porticos. Beneath this serene atmosphere, however, extensive technical, civil engineering, and maintenance operations are constantly underway. These behind-the-scenes efforts preserve the architectural integrity of the sacred complex while ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of services to millions of pilgrims.
Operating under the auspices of Astan Qods Razavi’s (AQR) Organization for Engineering and Maintenance, these specialized operations balance the preservation of historical heritage with modern safety requirements.
The projects range from repairing historic architectural elements to improving busy public service areas. Each initiative is carefully planned to respect the unique heritage of the sacred complex while addressing contemporary needs.
A notable example of these engineering efforts is the redesign of Ghadir Guesthouse, which aims to improve traffic flow, lighting, ventilation, and emergency exits.
In addition, the construction of 72 modern restrooms in the Dar al-Hujjah portico has significantly improved facilities for pilgrims. These technical interventions address complex structural challenges while enhancing cleanliness and accessibility in public areas.
Preserving historical heritage requires rigorous scientific analysis rather than superficial cosmetic improvements. AQR experts are currently conducting preliminary studies on the historic corridor of Dar al-Noor in Goharshad Mosque and assessing the condition of the tiled façade of Mirza Ja'far School.
Furthermore, specialized restoration work on the Clock Pavilion in Enghelab Eslami Courtyard involves the use of decorative mesh covers to preserve its visual appeal.
Ultimately, this network of behind-the-scenes engineering operations is not intended for display; rather, it serves to provide a safe and tranquil environment for every visitor.
By combining technical expertise with meticulous craftsmanship, Astan Qods Razavi helps ensure the uninterrupted provision of daily services, allowing pilgrims to focus on their spiritual devotion in a safe and welcoming environment.
